Following the principles of good practice, I offer the following Disclosure Statement.
How I earn money: I am a Professor, paid to teach, research, design and write in fields that interest me. Never is my academic research directed by anyone other than my own research agenda. It is a special privilege that I have a profession which permits me to independently say just what I believe, and not necessarily what I am paid to say.
Outside the University, I am usually paid to speak. In addition to an honorarium, I also accept payment to cover travel expenses. I don't expect to be compensated for my work that I am doing for not-for-profit organizations.
I also get paid for some of my writing. I write books that are sold commercially, and I am regularly invited and commissioned to write articles and papers for academic journals, book chapters, or newspapers. But in all cases, I remain independent.
Business attachments: In pursue of better design ethics, I do not serve on commercial boards, and I do not take stock-options to serve on advisory boards.
As Founding Director of the s_Lab Space Laboratory for Architectural Research and Design: I am leading an international academic research cluster, which is registered as a Trust. The s_Lab conducts interdisciplinary research and design in energy-efficient / zero-carbon architecture and urban design. I also consult on the conceptual design of new districts and green buildings. This work is research-based and implementation-oriented, using this web site to disseminate research outcomes and build up networks. The views expressed are hereby not necessarily those of the University, or of UNESCO.
