BERLIN STUDIO

Leaders:
Professor Steffen Lehmann, together with teachers from TU-Berlin and architects from Berlin

2 Weeks in Berlin: 23rd June to 09th July 2005

Student-funded Field Trip, for around 10-12 advanced students from QUT, open for students in Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Urban Design.

Open to students minimum in Year 3 and above. The students will be able to claim the field trip as Elective in Semester 2.

This 'Global Studio' is in conjunction with the Technical University of Berlin, lecturer Stephanus Schmitz, and with the support of two architects from Berlin, Georg Gewers and Frank Barkow. It is possible that students from UNSW Sydney and from Newcastle might also participate.

Theme:

"Researching the European City: Strategies of urban insertion. An urban design intervention around Spreebogen. Passive Design in a European Climate. Berlin's architectural Heritage. "

Germany superimposed on Australia
Germany superimposed on Australia.

1. Passive Design: Commercial Intervention, Berlin 60%

A short conceptual urban design project for an inner-city site in Berlin. In terms of scales, they could be small-building projects, which would require in-depth and detailed design resolutions from students. They could be projects of greater scales, such as the design of large building complex, landscape architectural design, and urban design, in which students are expected to tackle broader issues in relation to the projects. In terms of design orientations, they could be ones emphasising technology, ecology, history and theory, or digital environment. In terms of function-based building types, they could be of residential buildings, cultural centres, commercial complexes, and so forth. Or they could be composite projects that combine a number of these functions. Or they could be more specific that is that the undergraduate and postgraduate outcomes explore and model passively designed commercial buildings in Berlin. Assessment: Design Charette at the end of the Berlin Studio. See the site at:
http://www.stadtentwicklung.berlin.de/planen/hauptstadtplanung/de/dorotheenstadt/

2. Berlin Architectural Heritage

Leaders: Frank Barkow's office and Georg Gewers' office: Berlin tour de force, including new passive designed office buildings. The students are able to enrich their background and expertise with new insights.
See Georg Gewers' work at: www.gewers-kuehn-kuehn.de
See Frank Barkow's work at: www.barkowleibinger.com
Assessment: No formal assessment however the tour will underpin the design studio and travel journal

3. Communication Skills

Assessment: 20% for Travel journal focusing on observing through sketching.

4. Participation

The participating students are QUT ambassadors and their participation will be factored into the course assessment. Assessment: 20%

5. Financial arrangement

It has been agreed in principle that the groups from the participating institutes are expected to pay for their own cross-continental airfares (approx. $1,900), travel expenses and accommodation expenses (2-star hotel, in single room around 50 Euro, in double room around 35 Euro p.P incl. breakfast; total approx. $600-850).
Approximate total costs: $3,000 per student

6. Accommodation and studio space

Studio rooms: TU Berlin have offered their services and we can use the Ackerstrasse Studios of TUB in Wedding. We will stay at Kantstrasse, Pension 'Viola Nova', where we secured clean, centrally-located rooms, good budget accommodation.

7. Exhibition

It is envisaged that an exhibition of students' works will be held after the studio in Berlin.

8. Possible sponsorship for the BERLIN STUDIO:

We are currently talking to two companies for some financial support.
